Make Them Pay is a collaborative project
between Elle Magazine, Mother and the
Feminist Times aiming to spark a more frank
and open discussion around the gender pay gap.
In a world of perceived equality in the workplace,
women's salaries still lag behind dramatically–
according to the Office of National Statistics,
women working full-time in Britain earn 17.8%
less than their male counterparts*.
So if he does the same job as you,
ask him his salary.
*based on a weekly median average salary. Other sources give the figure as closer to 15%, but in any
case we’re far from equal when payday comes round. At makethempay.co.uk we use the median
average data provided by the Office of National Statistics to give an indication of the pay gap by
sector, and though we cannot assume accuracy based on individual salaries, wish the data to
illustrate quite how far we’ve still got to go until parity is truly reached up and down the country.
